30-day guarantee on Omni’s App Store apps

by Linda Sharps on April 7, 2010

Now that we have three products available from the App Store, certain things have changed about the way we do business. The access to our software has changed. The way we receive payment for our software has changed. The flexibility we've always had with regards to discounts has changed.

We plan to continue developing for iPhone and iPad. As Ken wrote back in January, it's our intent to bring all five of our productivity applications to iPad. This means, obviously, that these aren't short-term business changes for us.

It has always been Omni's policy to give you as much information as possible to help you make an informed purchasing decision, because we truly want you to be happy with what you buy. This is a core value of our company, which we prioritize in a number of ways. We try to make sure you have access to good resources and documentation. We provide free trials on all of our Mac software. We offer top-notch customer service, including phone support. We offer a 30-day guarantee on products sold from our online store, no questions asked.

Your satisfaction is every bit as important to us as the sale.

We're not trying to say we don't need to make money, because we do. We need to pay our rent, pay our employees, help others when possible, save enough to make it through bad years, and in a good year, hopefully even have a little extra for profit sharing. Omni has limited resources to invest into our development work, and we do have to recoup those expenses or we can't continue offering the products that we do.

However, no one here wants you to buy something from us that you won't enjoy using. Our primary goals are to help you decide if our products are right for you before you buy, and to help make things right if you aren't happy after you buy.

To that end, we've made some decisions that are intended to help us continue to do business the way we want, even within this new distribution model. Starting today, we are offering the same 30-day money back guarantee on all of our iPhone and iPad apps as we do with our other software. This applies to OmniFocus for iPhone, OmniGraffle for iPad, and OmniGraphSketcher for iPad. If you find that you're unsatisfied with your purchase, email sales@omnigroup.com with a copy of your App Store receipt and the reason for return, and we'll refund your money.

Let's just be up front about the fact that this choice obviously opens us up to some risk. We pay 30% of our App Store sales to Apple whether or not we refund a purchase, for one thing.

So why are we doing this? Because we want to give you the same confidence in buying our App Store software as you have when you buy our Mac software. Because it's important to us that we continue to provide the same support and service we always have. Because we believe the benefit outweighs the risk.

The 30-day guarantee isn't intended to take the place of a demo period. We do ask that you take the time to look at the product features, watch the videos, and ask questions before you make your purchase. If we haven't given you what you need to make a buying decision, please, tell us what would help.

Finally, if one of our products doesn't seem right for you, we don't want to try and convince you otherwise. We'd love to hear why it isn't right for you, of course, because that's how we make improvements, but we don't want you to buy something you don't need. The ideal outcome for us is when you get amazing value from the applications we create.

That is, after all, the real reason we do what we do.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. We hope you know your comments and concerns are always welcome.

Thanks for being one of the best Mac software companies out there. It’s sad that Apple still doesn’t offer refunds via the App Store, and I thoroughly applaud you for taking a risk like this to ensure that you have the most satisfied customers around. You guys set a level of professionalism in the Mac and iPhone developer community that few other companies can attest to.

Looking forward to OmniOutliner for iPad and all the other great software you’ve got in the pipeline!

I’m all choked up!  You guys write great software (I own ‘em all!) and also have the best policies.

Keep making more, and I’ll be sure to buy!

(Just please put a rush on for OF for iPad!  And OO for iphone/ipad!)

Thanks for doing business in this manner. Your level of costumer service is only matched by the quality of your first-rate products.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. Do you plan on requiring users accept the refund through PayPal or will you mail cheques as well? Please let us know how it turns out!

This is a great example of being customer oriented. Now I respect you more as a company.

More proof that you are an amazing software company! Not only do I get the very best apps, but the very best customer service as well. I’m on the GTD group on Yahoo, and I am always promoting your software! I probably sound like a shill to ignorati, but I know better!

I love you guys!

Could you put up the software in the store for free, but with a “feature” which makes it a trial unless you do an in-app purchase to upgrade?

I just want to comment on how impressed I am with your products and do appreciate the fact that you stand behind your product.  I for one have been so impressed with many applications I have purchased from Omni, that the thought of returning it has never even crossed my mind.

Please keep up the great work.

I feel the same as many that other commenters. You guys rock!
You are the bar by witch I judge all other software companies.

Your return policy is very generous, especially considering that you would be out the 30% to Apple.
May I suggest that you work to have all iPad demo units at the Apple stores stocked with all your products. I have noticed that they all have omniFocus on them already.
That way you could direct us all to “Demo” you awesome apps at our nearest Apple reseller.

Thanks for all your hard work, keep it up,
We all appreciate it,

Love, Soul

Wow, i’d like to give Omni a big hug. Being that user friendly is so uncommon these days. Knowing that people with such a great attitude receive the money makes it so much easier to spend the money :-)

This is why I’m willing to spend the money on Omni products. I’ve never been disappointed, but I know somebody cares if I have a problem.

I still think free versions, e.g. without the capability to save or export, combined with an in-app purchase of the full version would be the better idea (and would eliminate the risk of paying 30% to Apple while reimbursing 100% to the buyer). As people do not really get interrupted by phone calls on the iPad, this is sufficient for testing the apps. Outside the US a lot of people do not provide Apple with credit card data, they prepay iTunes vouchers and putting down $50 in advance just to try a product is nothing a lot of people will do. I would really re-think that.

Yet another reasons I love you all with a white-hot love.

dreyfus, I believe that type of app may be prohibited by the AppStore agreement. Light versions, regardless of price, must be useful by themselves. My understanding is they cannot simply be disabled versions of apps designed to up sell a full product.  Not allowing any Save or Export could be construed as making them useless.

‘lite’ version apps cannot be useless or display ghosted, crippled features to up-sell, but may, like the Mac OmniGraffle trial, be limited in capacity. Thus it would probably be a logical move for you guys to make a free iPad OmniGraffle, with an in-app purchase to upgrade to the version that allows more than 10 elements, and more than N stencils maybe.
The downside is that this requires more coding. The upside is that the bump in downloads will also increase the appstore exposure.

P.S. can’t wait for a universal version of OmniFocus. Please let us iPhone OmniFocus users get some improved resolution without re-purchasing the app.

When I wrote earlier this week about why I was hesitant to buy OG I was hoping you’d consider a demo version that couldn’t export or could only create a document with a small number of objects. This I didn’t expect-but I’ll take you up on it once I’ve finished the project I’m in the middle of. You guys rock.

It should be possible to create a version that disallows export or printing and which is limited to a single canvas.

If there are oddball contractual issues that prevent one from offering a “crippled” version of a full price app, then I would recommend instead creating a brand new app.  Call it the Omni Doodler.

Use the omni doodler simply to doodle shapes and thoughts during a meeting.  Like a whiteboard basically.  You can’t export stuff off of a whiteboard in your office, so it should be just fine to offer the same capability, but enhanced through the magic of Omni’s user interface so people can whiteboard flowcharts or whatever on their ipad.

Even throw in other omni stuff like outliner on there.  The catch is just that it only has one canvas and you can only look at it on your ipad, you can’t export it.

Then we’d all use that product, decide how we like the power and UI, and based on that choose to buy Graffle or whatever.
