The Blog

OmniOutliner 3.7.1 is now available! While it doesn't add any new features, it does fix a regression we had in 3.7 that caused multiple OmniFocus links to be merged into a single link when pasted to OmniOutliner.

It also contains a significant upgrade to the HTML/DHTML exporters and as a result, the QuickLook previews as well. Some of the more notable changes are color transparency support in DHTML/QuickLook, gutter color support, adjusting widths when row labels are used to keep correct indentation, and tweaks to remove background color artifacts.

Please note that the HTML (Dynamic) exports will not render transparent colors in Internet Explorer and other browsers that don't support the rgba CSS attribute. OmniWeb, Safari, and Firefox can handle this. So for those that use transparent colors and want to share your files with IE users, you can download the OmniOutliner Exports Plugin pack which now has a version of the DHTML exporter that doesn't support transparency. All colors will instead be exported as fully opaque. For OmniOutliner standard users, the included HTML exporter does not support transparency to provide the widest compatibility.

You can read the much more complete list of changes in the release notes or go and download the new version. Just a few minor changes in beta 2. Most notable is a fix for a regression that was causing multiple OmniFocus links to merge into a single blob when pasted into OmniOutliner.

If you make use of the HTML exporters or QuickLook support, please contact us if you notice any problems with the numerous changes made in beta 1.

Thanks!

Release notes

This beta is primarily to fix issues with the HTML exporters as well as QuickLook preview support as it uses the dynamic HTML exporter. We've also included a hanger fix that could be triggered from mouse input events and fixed the issue with short and long date formats in the QuickLook previews.

Instead of listing off all the exporter changes on the blog, here's some example comparison images:

There's a new beta version of the DHTML exporter available for OmniOutliner Professional users to try out. It fixes a number of long standing issues with the exporter that will be incorporated into the QuickLook preview generator when it's ready.

What's changed in this version:
  • Fixed a number of (all known) issues with background colors not rendering correctly.
  • Background color applied to the whole document will color the whole background of the page
  • Added support for opacity. (IE does not support rgba and will not render the color at all)
  • Added strikethrough style
  • Added gutter color
  • Added superscript/subscript style
  • Fixed issues with table spacing creating gaps in the background colors
  • Added gridlines to the top and right side when using horizontal and vertical grid lines
  • Named styles that are inherited by level styles will now appear
  • All font weight styles that go beyond 900 font weight will now render at 900 font weight instead of the norm
  • Non-italic style in the middle of a row is now supported
  • Row numbering will use the same style as the row
  • Centered text in the topic column will now be centered (Only if the topic column or whole row is set to be centered. Text alignment applied at text insertion level is not currently supported)
  • Fixed an issue with row handle visibility being set incorrectly

You can find the exporter plug-in in this forum post here. If you have any feedback on it, please try to post it in the forum thread. Thanks!

QuickLook support has officially arrived! Hopefully this time with no time bombs :) If you haven't been following the betas, here's some changes for this version:

  • 10.5: QuickLook support. QuickLook previews are dynamically generated with XSLT on the source code using the same transform as the dynamic HTML export. This means you can interact with your outline in the same way with collapsing and expanding sections.
  • 10.5: Added high-res versions of the app, document, and OPML icons.
  • Added support for the OmniFocus protocol so links can be manually typed or scripted.
  • Changed how backups are saved to remove the 16MB file limit imposed by saving to the resource fork that would cause backups to fail silently. The backup is now written out to .OOBK inside the document's file wrapper. *Note: If you modified your file to be flat, the backup will still be saved to the resource fork with the 16MB limit.*

There's also a number of bug, hanger, and crash fixes.

You can find the full release notes here. Go and download it!

Only minor changes from beta 2. Ampersands and other punctuation in files names will no longer prevent a QuickLook preview from being generated. The Find window will appear in the space you called it from instead of the one it was first opened in.

You can find the full release notes here and the download page here. Enjoy!

Sorry for the beta expiring on you! Beta 2 is now ready with a few fixes. QuickLook support has been improved to support summary cells and the broken image links are fixed. The esc and enter key will also once again toggle edit states when the appropriate defaults are set.

I know things have been rather quiet on the OmniOutliner front, but 3.7 beta 1 is now available! Highlights include:

  • QuickLook support - It's dynamically created with XSLT using the same transform as the dynamic HTML export. This means you can expand and collapse sections in the preview.
  • New high-res icons for 10.5
  • OmniFocus protocol support so you can script or type in OmniFocus links
There's also a number of bug and crash fixes included. A big one being that we've changed how backup saves are handled for file wrappers (the default file format). The backup copy will now be saved to the hidden file .OOBK inside the wrapper. This is to work around a 16 MB file size limit that was discovered. If you've edited your document to be a flat file, it will still save to the resource fork of the file with the 16 MB size limit.
