Just a Few Bits: ONLINE REVIEWS of INDIVIDUAL TRACKS from "HIGH RELIEF"

Complicated Kid

(review of "High Relief" from mp3.com)
"Polish! This song absolutely gleams. And Susan's edgy but vunerable voice is placed like an emerald in this setting. It's a song with a lot of space inside, a lot of depth to the sounds, from the snapping, thumping drums and lightly strummed acoustic guitars to the gliss of the dive-bomb guitars sailing by in the chorus. There are also nicely treated harmony lines through the chorus. Susan has worked on her images and found a consistant thread through some complex feelings, resolving in a call for some 'high relief' from the shades of gray around her."

"I like performers who say 'go ahead and let me have it, I can take it'. To me it says that they really aren't too worried that I'm going to say something bad. In Susan's case, she has nothing to worry about... She has fantastic piano arrangements and an intriguing vocal style that defies explanation. You have to hear her for yourself... she has my vote for pick of the week."

"Susan Court's high, semi-delicate voice and mostly-soft instrumentation characterize her tunes. Court inhabits the dual realms of pop and rock gracefully, equally borrowing elements from each."

"Cool songs from a lady whose singing makes you feel like she's somebody you could 'sit down & talk to.' She also has a streak of humor running through the comments on her WWW pages http://www.fundeling.com Surely there will be comparisons made... but NOT here! Susan is Susan... clearly original vocals against piano, guitar & drums. I especially liked 'BLIGHT & BONNY', super arrangement & extra energy out of her vocals (perhaps that's also because musically I'm in an 'orchestral' phase in my compositions right now). She gets our MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED & also another H-O-T pick of the week for best "non-ivory-towered-studiohead music"!" 9/4/99 rz
