Expand All
Expands all collapsed rows in the outline or the hoisted section.
Collapse All
Collapses all expanded rows in the outline or the hoisted section.
Expand Row
Expands the currently selected row, showing its children. Hold Option while selecting this command to completely expand the row and its descendants.
Collapse Row
Collapses the currently selected row, hiding its descendants. If you have a childless row selected, or an already collapsed row, it instead collapses the parent row, hiding the currently selected row and its siblings. Hold Option while selecting this command to completely collapse the row and its descendants.
Hoist
The current row and all its children are hoisted to become the entire visible outline. Hoisting displays the currently selected row and its descendants as if they were the entire outline, so you can concentrate on one section at a time. The parent row becomes the outline title, and its children become top-level items.
Editing the title while a section is hoisted is just like editing the parent item. If you press Return while editing the title, a new section will be created at the same level, and will be hoisted instead of the currently hoisted section.
Note that you can do hoists within hoists. For example, you could hoist Chapter 4 of your book, to focus on just that chapter. Then, within that hoisted chapter, you could hoist just one section of the chapter. To get back to the whole book, you would need to unhoist twice, once to get back to the chapter, and once to get back to the entire book.
In OmniOutliner Professional you can hoist a section by just clicking it in the utility drawer's sections list.
Unhoist
When you are done focusing on the current section, use this command to return the outline to the state it was before you hoisted.
Unhoist All
If you have a bunch of nested hoists, this command will release all of them at once, freeing you from the need to tediously unhoist repeatedly to get back to your entire document.
Show Outline Title
This sub-menu lets you control when the title of your outline is shown in the document pane. Exactly one of these self-explanatory sub-menu items must be selected at any given time. The default is Only When Hoisted. There is an analog to these commands in the Document inspector.
Show Column Titles
This sub-menu lets you control when the titles of your columns are displayed in the document pane. Exactly one of these self-explanatory sub-menu items must be checked at any one time. The default is Always.
Show/Hide Status Checkboxes
This is a toggle menu item that changes its wording depending on its current setting.
Show Status Checkboxes is visible when the status checkboxes are hidden. Selecting it makes the boxes visible and changes the wording of the menu item.
Hide Status Checkboxes is visible when the status checkboxes are visible. Selecting it hides the boxes and changes the wording of the menu item.
This item doesn't affect the presence of the checkboxes in the document; instead, it simply determines whether they are visible.
Row Text
You may choose to show all of the text in every row of your outline, or to collapse ("fold") rows you are not currently editing. "Folded" rows will only show the first line of their text.
Notes
The items on this sub-menu control how notes are displayed.
If you select Display Inline, notes are displayed in the main document window, just below the test of the row to which the note is attached.
If you select Display in Pane, a pane is created at the bottom of the document window, which displays the note (if there is one) attached to the current row.
Attachments
The items on this sub-menu control how attachments are displayed.
Show/Hide Utility Drawer
This menu item shows and hides the Utility Drawer. Whoa!
Show/Hide Styles View
This menu item shows and hides the delectable Styles View.
Show/Hide Toolbar
This menu item shows and hides the toolbar at the top of the document window. You can also click the white capsule on the right end of the title bar.
Create/Remove Document-Specific Toolbar
You might find yourself using different commands when working with different documents. Choose Create Document-Specific Toolbar to set up the toolbar especially for the current document. Your other documents will continue to use the standard toolbar however you have customized it. Remove Document-Specific Toolbar returns the toolbar to normal.
Customize Toolbar...
In case you don't like the current state of OmniOutliner's toolbar, you can use this menu item to change it. This works like other toolbar customizers you may have used for other OS X applications, such as Finder.
Dragging items onto and off the toolbar.
Once the sheet of toolbar items is visible on your screen, you can drag items to the toolbar to place them there. To remove an item from the toolbar, drag it off the toolbar while the pane is visible.
The set of icons available includes spaces and separators, so you can make the toolbar all pretty as well as useful.
The default set of toolbar icons
If you want to go back the factory settings (in other words, the set of icons we guessed most people would be most interested in having on their toolbar), simply drag the rectangle with the defaults in it to the toolbar. Those icons will replace whatever customizations you may have engineered earlier.
Choosing images and sizes
Use the drop-down menu to select between showing icons, icons with text labels, or just text labels for all the items in the toolbar. Use the checkbox if you prefer the smaller icons.
